Book Tour: Lands of Jade; Crimson Winter, Vol. 2 by Justine Alley Dowsett...

Darkness falls…so I can… see the light of day again

Mirror World Publishing and Sapphyria's Book Promotions present the 1-week book for Lands of Jade: Crimson Winter, Vol. 2 by Justine Alley Dowsett.

About Lands of Jade:

Darkness falls...

For the first time in eight hundred years, the sun sets on the desert world of Crimson Winter, throwing the planet into unexpected darkness and further chaos. And with the setting of the sun comes the unexpected rise of hordes of undead creatures from the endless Sand Lakes.

...so I can...

Yukari Namikoya, Japanese high school student turned Chosen of Sapphiros, must rise to the occasion and use the powers she has been given to try and protect those she's come to love against overwhelming odds.

...see the light of day again.

But when each night lasts a little longer, Yukari soon realizes that their days might be numbered and a sinister force beyond even the menace of the Vile Emperor might be behind the terrors that are besieging the planet during such a desperate time. The worst part is that Yukari doesn't know if her powers, or even the combined forces of her allies will be enough to protect the Kingdom of Taiyou, let alone the whole world.

There were many wounded among the survivors in the green fields of Taiyou outside the Temple of Jade. I walked among the lucky, and the not so lucky, to see if I was needed by anyone, but by now the wounded had been treated to the best of my abilities and those of the magical healers from the former school of the Oujou sorceresses.

Perhaps it had been working together against a common foe, or their shared losses, but the soldiers of the Lion Brigade and the Roughlanders were intermingled now like they hadn’t been on the journey here. And, although their wounds may have been treated, bandaged, and in some cases their flesh magically knitted back together, they were still feeling the effects of the brutal assault they had faced at the hands of an unidentified assailant.

As I made my way toward the imposing mountain temple, I was greeted by friendly nods of acknowledgment from almost everyone I passed. I was known now, to these people at least, whereas less than a week ago I had been a stranger in this land, hiding who I was.

There was no more hiding now – Yukari Namikoya, Chosen of Sapphiros, was a name most people would soon know, and my frizzy bob of pale blue hair and intense blue eyes had never made it possible for me to fade into the background.

Hotaru, Kaji, Yue, and I – the four Chosen of Sapphiros – were still feeling the effects of the assault as well, though in our case those effects were more emotional than physical. The strain was getting to all of us, watching the pain and suffering of the people we had brought here with us, but had been unable to defend.

“We can’t just stay here,” I announced, tired beyond belief as I slowly climbed the temple’s steps to where Kaji sat conversing with the young, white-haired leader of the Lion Brigade, Sir Leon Rama. “That woman could come back at any time. We still don’t know what she was after or where she went.”

“That’s true, but on the move or sitting here, we’d still have a large number of wounded people to protect,” Kaji pointed out. “If she wants to come after us, she’s going to.”

“We need more supplies, the more seriously injured need shelter, and we’re like sitting ducks out here.”

The metaphor slid right out in my frustration before I remembered where we were and that Rama had likely never seen a duck in his life. The four of us had arrived here from Earth – Tokyo, Japan to be precise – and after only two months on this world, I was starting to forget we were foreigners here. Of course there were times where I was forcefully reminded of the truth and a wave of not exactly homesickness, but more like nostalgia, would pass over me, leaving me feeling disoriented and out of place.

I grimaced at my error, but Rama let it slide with no more than a raised eyebrow. It was common knowledge Chosen were from other worlds, and by now I assumed the people we had been travelling with were more or less used to our strangeness.

The Last Timekeepers and the Noble Slave
The Last Timekeepers, Book 3
by Sharon Ledwith

About the Book:

Eleven-year-old Drake Bailey is an analytical thinker and the genius of the Timekeeper crew. However, no logic or mathematical acumen can change the color of his skin, or prepare him for this third Timekeeper mission in antebellum Georgia. To survive, Drake must learn to play the role of a plantation slave and when confronted with the brutality, hatred, and racism of the deep south, he’ll have to strategically keep one move ahead of his sadistic captors to ensure his lineage continues.

In a dark world of Voodoo, zombies, and ritualistic sacrifice, the Timekeepers must ensure a royal bloodline survives. Can Drake remove both literal and figurative chains to save both himself and a devout slave girl from a terrible fate? If he can’t summon the necessary courage, humanity could stand to lose one of its greatest leaders.

Read an Excerpt:

Drake read over their Timekeeper mission again. Blood. Deep south. Race. Broken. Soul. Red flags waved through his mind like a category five hurricane. He’d seen one too many movies and documentaries to know 1855 was not a great time in history for people with his skin color. Drake shut the Timekeepers’ log, and shook his head vehemently. “There’s no way in hell I’m gonna go on this mission, Lilith!”

Lilith wrinkled her long, narrow nose. “I understand why you have these fearful feelings, Drake, but I do not choose where you go into the past. Belial is the one who holds that power, and seeks to disrupt history whenever he sees a chance.”

“May I see the Timekeepers’ log, Drake?” the Prof asked.

“Sure, Prof, but I’m still not going,” Drake replied, passing the log over.

“Can he do that?” Ravi asked, glancing at Treena.

“I don’t think so. It’s like signing a contract for a movie. You’re committed to finishing the film or you face the studio lawyers. Case closed, gavel down.”

“Lilith isn’t a judge.” Ravi looked at Lilith. “Right?”

“No, Ravi, I am not your judge, but what Treena said rings true. You were all chosen as Timekeepers for a reason, and are bound by this covenant,” Lilith replied, unclasping her hands. “That is all I can offer you.”

“Fine. I’ll just remove my Babel necklace,” Drake said, digging under his shirt. “Problem solved.”

“Drake, why are you freaking out like this?” Jordan asked, helping Amanda to her feet. “It can’t be as bad as fighting the Nazis in our second mission.”

“Yeah, or being interrogated in the Gestapo Headquarters by Belial’s creepy crony Marcus Crowley,” Ravi added.

“Why don’t you ask Amanda why she puked? It wasn’t because she had warm and fuzzy feelings about this mission,” Drake argued.

Melody wiped Amanda’s chin. “Do you feel well enough to speak?”

“I…I think so.”

Professor Lucas whistled. “Now I see why Amanda was sick to her stomach. Using the words deep south and the date as a clue, this mission puts us in the antebellum era, six years before the American Civil War began. This period was filled with so much hate, racism, turmoil, and political upheaval, I’m willing to bet these emotions went right through her.”

“If Uncle John is right, why would Belial want to change anything back then?” Jordan asked, frowning. “That slithering douche-bag lives for human suffering during those dark times in history.”

“Exactly.” Drake removed his Babel necklace. “So why tempt fate?”

“N-no, Drake, you have to come.” Amanda reached for his hand, and squeezed it. “Trust me, you’re an important part of this mission.”

“Huh? How?”

“It’s hard to explain. I just know you have to be there.”

Book Tour, Guest Post, and Giveaway: The Demons of Square Mile by Laurence Raphael Brothers...

About The Demons of the Square Mile:

The real story behind Brexit.

Occult Private Investigator, Nora Simeon, and her uncannily handsome partner Eyre - an elemental given human form - follow a trail of magic, murder, and conspiracy from the luxurious apartment towers of Manhattan's upper east side to the ancient depths of London's Inner Temple. Along the way they encounter powerful sorcerers, magisterial barristers, evil templars, and, of course, more demons gone rogue.

With their newly acquired ward, Martha - a rat-demon - in tow, they uncover a secret so profound it could both undermine the world's financial system and topple the British government.

Guest Post: Alternative Futures in the Nora Simeon Novellas

By Laurence Raphael Brothers

I started writing the Nora Simeon novellas with the vague idea that they were set in something like the current day, but insensibly, as I worked my way through the first one, the book slipped gently into the future. Not the distant science-fictional future of spaceships and sentient computers, nor even the middle distance of autonomous vehicles and universal surveillance, but “the day after tomorrow”. This setting offers a totally familiar world (well, except for the sorcery and the demons and all that) but one that’s not set in stone in terms of current events.

Because one thread in these books is societal criticism (hopefully not too annoying because the first purpose is entertainment) I didn’t want Nora’s world to diverge casually or accidentally from our own. Instead I wanted its divergences to be specific and limited, so that as the reader you can assume that if you know something unstated about our world, it will apply to Nora’s as well.

It was always my plan to take Nora to the UK in the first sequel, so I had to deal with Brexit, which at the time of conceiving the story was pretty clearly going to happen, but whose details were unknown. Of course, like the vast majority of economists and observers outside Britain, I was reasonably confident it would be a disaster, but the precise scale and consequences of the disaster were unclear. The easiest approach was to confront this unknown head-on, since I thought it so wonderfully stupid and self-destructive. In the story I could come up with some reason, however fantastic, that would necessarily make more sense than the idiotic actuality.

And so a point of divergence between our world and Nora’s is that in ours Brexit was the absurdly unintended consequence of in-fighting between factions of the Conservative party, neither of whom actually wanted Brexit to take place, whereas in hers it came about due to political infighting between continental and British sorcerers. The difference there is that in Nora’s world at least the group who promoted Brexit sincerely wanted it to happen, so I suppose in that respect her world is more sensible than ours.

I’d actually completed the ms when first reports came of some new form of flu or something like that arising in China. Pretty soon it became clear that if I wanted readers to imagine Nora as living in the Manhattan of our own world, I’d have to do something. Because in the novella, people can go out to restaurants and bars and hotels and take international flights without worrying and without wearing masks, either. This time, however, I decided head-on was not the right approach, despite this being totally appropriate for other current-day and near-future stories. And so, in Nora’s world, where sorcery is used in secret to influence the profits of investment banks and mold the behavior of the global economy, it’s perfectly consistent for this generally immoral and unethical art to be used, for once, for the good of humanity, in wiping out the nascent disease before it could take hold. Because, after all, Covid is terrible for the economy....

Anyway, easy and indeed appropriate as this decision was, I worried it over for a while because it seemed a bit less than forthright to finesse this terrible disease that has killed so many people and damaged the lives of literally everyone else in the world. And moreover, no one could anymore entertain the fantasy that the story’s events might be real in our world. In the end I came to the conclusion that whatever secondary moral or even political goals these books might serve, the principal one is entertainment, and that especially in this unpleasant last year with who knows how much more unpleasantness left to come, that a fantasy with no global pandemic would be far more attractive than one without.

And so, apart from one brief mention explaining how the Covid-19 was sorcerously decapitated before it could take hold, you won’t find masks, social distancing, vaccine inequity, or the perverse, stupid, and indeed wholly evil attempts of our various political leaders to downplay or minimize the disease anywhere in The Demons of the Square Mile.

Read an Excerpt:

 “Simeon Investigations.”

“We have your minion,” said an inhuman voice. A demon’s for sure, unless it had been synthesized. It sounded like shards of broken glass jangling in a paper bag, but I could understand it. What I couldn’t understand was how anyone could kidnap Eyre without getting their asses handed to them. Gun or no gun.

“Who are you?”

More broken glass sounds, but no words. After a few seconds I realized it was laughter. At last the voice answered. “We would be foolish to divulge our true name. Call us Émigré.”

“What do you want?”

“We have a job for you.”

I felt a flash of red rage. My little pet fire elemental, Spark, flared up in sympathy from its urn on the windowsill, and I thought I might just burst into flame myself.

“You stupid infernal-plane motherfucker! I charge a hundred an hour. All you had to do was clear a check and I’d work for you. But now–”

“Now we have leverage, yes?”

“Let me speak to him.”

“Certainly.”

Brief silence, and then Eyre came on the line. His voice was weak. I wanted to reach through the phone and tear broken-glass-voice to pieces with my hands.

“Hey, Nora,” he said. “I’m really sorry about this. They got hold of my sigil somehow. They know what I am.”

“Eyre,” I said, “listen to me. I’m coming for you. Don’t fight them yourself.” I was thinking, Not till I get there.

“No fear of that,” he said. “It’s – you’ll have to see. They say they’ll let me go if you work for them. But I don’t think–”

Eyre’s voice cut off and broken-glass-voice resumed.

“Nora Simeon is known to us as a hunter of demons. She was contracted to hunt the demon Barbatos. She fulfilled her contract and killed the mighty demon Azriel.”

Actually, it was Eyre who had the final word against Azriel, but there was a lesson there I wanted this demon to learn.

“I’m a PI. An investigator. Barbatos was just a missing person job. But listen carefully. Azriel would have been in no danger from me, except she attacked Eyre. My partner, Eyre. I’ve got nothing against demons these days. Not unless they kidnap my friends. Do you understand me, Émigré?

A pause. “Yes.”

I knew even as I was saying it how stupid it was. But I couldn’t help myself. I was too damn angry.

“If anything happens to Eyre, I will destroy you, too. Count on it. But if you release him right now, I might just let you live.”

A longer pause. The phone was slick and uncomfortable in my hand. Then: “Very well.”

“What?”

“Come to us. We will release your minion into your care. We – do not wish to be destroyed. We are used to negotiations in our world and – and we realize that we now exist in your own. We wish you to do a job for us. We will pay. We did not believe you would listen to us if we solicited your services without leverage.”

“Okay. Where are you?”

“We are located at...” Another pause, and I heard indistinct jangling noises away from the phone. “Yes. 87th Street and York Avenue. The red building. Apartment 18E.”

Demons on the upper east side. Why not?

“All right,” I said. “I’ll be there shortly.”

Yet more silence, like it was thinking about saying something else. Then: “Goodbye.”

I smelled something burning, turned my head to see a thin swirl of black smoke rising from around Spark’s pot. The tiny elemental had gotten so hot from my emotions during the call it had scorched the paint right off the windowsill. Fortunately it was a metal sill and frame, with nothing inflammable nearby. Spark had been growing stronger lately, more in the last few months than it had during the previous ten years since I’d summoned and bound it as my first and only successful feat of sorcery. I shook some powdered incense into the elemental’s urn as a treat, and like a dragonfly made of flame, it flew up and spiraled around my body, leaving only a faint sensation of warmth behind. Spark had already forgotten my rage of a moment before. Any other time I would have stopped to play with it, but not today.

I returned to Eyre’s desk and retrieved his pistol, a massive old Colt M1911, made sure it was loaded and safe, and dropped it into a tote bag along with his phone. My own compact Ruger went into its tailored holster. Maybe Émigré was telling the truth about letting Eyre go, but if it wasn’t, I’d have something to say.

Reflections and Rejoices in my Amazing Author Life…

I usually celebrate February (my birthday month) by setting up a giveaway contest via Goodreads or Rafflecopter, and engage my readers and followers to enter. On occasion, I’ve hired a promotional specialist to host a virtual tour for the week of my birthday. However, this year is different. This year (2021), I turn the big 6-0. Whoa. Just thinking about it makes my head spin. Looking at the big picture, sixty is a milestone in my life, as well as in my crazy writing career. In the last ten years, I’ve had the opportunity to publish five books with a small press publisher, and launched two young adult book series. Woohoo!

Another milestone to be celebrated this year is the tenth anniversary of this blog, Sharon Ledwith: I came. I saw. I wrote., happening in May. I feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude, yet at the same time a smidgen of discontent has wiggled its way into my fragile psyche. Perhaps it’s the continuance of the Covid-19 pandemic and remnants of the political upheaval we’ve all experienced. Or maybe it’s that I’ve noticed the publishing landscape has changed so much since I landed my first contract in 2011. I honestly don’t recognize the publishing paradigm anymore, and I’m sure many authors would agree with me. In hindsight, I guess I shouldn’t take myself so seriously. Instead, I think I’ll learn to be more flexible and just go with the flow in these ever changing times.

That said, here’s a snippet from Dan Millman’s book, The Life You Were Born To Live which offers some sage advice on the Law of Flexibility: “Flexibility requires an alert and expansive state of awareness; it entails not just ‘going with the flow’, but embracing and making constructive use of it. Mastering this law, we turn stumbling blocks into stepping-stones and problems into opportunities; when high winds blow, we don’t just ‘accept’ or tolerate these winds, we put up windmills.”

I’ve decided to put up some windmills and celebrate my milestone birthday with a Rafflecopter giveaway and a $3 off sale on ALL my books at Mirror World Publishing’s online store. I’ll be giving away two signed copies of the first books in my two young adult series: The Last Timekeepers and the Arch of Atlantis, and Lost and Found, Book #1; Mysterious Tales from Fairy Falls. To make it easier for you, I’ve listed the buy links for all my books with Mirror World Publishing below.

Book Tour: Mirror's Despair by Justine Alley Dowsett and Murandy Damodred...

Mirena’s back to claim what’s hers; this time, Tendro is ready for her.

Welcome to the 1-week book release tour for
Mirror's Despair
Mirror Worlds, Book 4
Justine Alley Dowsett and Murandy Damodred

About Mirror's Despair:

Following ten tense years of absence, Mirena Calanais suddenly resurfaces as the Avatar of the Destroyer. With Abraxas’ dark army at her back, she’s determined to reclaim what she feels is her due; control over the lands the Panarch’im once ruled.

His political career and his marriage both drying up, Tendro Seynor long suspected this day would come, but what he isn’t prepared for is Mirena’s return to his personal life. There’s more to Mirena than her persona as the Dark Avatar; she’s the mother of the son Tendro hasn’t seen since the day he was born. As her presence in his life grows, Mirena confides in Tendro that she’s being haunted by someone who should be dead. As this vengeful presence closes in on her and the Destroyer’s hand thouches the world once more, they begin to realize their son may be at the center of it all and his innocence hangs in the balance.

Can Tendro and Mirena put aside their rivalry for the sake of their families, or will the bad blood between them finally escalate to the point where it has the power to tear the entire world apart?

Guest Post: Writing as an Escape

By Justine Alley Dowsett

I write what I like to call ‘Escapism fiction.’ Simply put, I like to write stories that transport my readers to far away lands and distant futures; to show them an alternate vision of what life could be. Ultimately, my goal is to provide readers with a vivid world they can escape into for a while, but I’ve found that writing such stories can be a kind of escape for me as well.

Most of my books are co-written with my sister, Murandy. The two of us invent a world and a host of characters and then we retreat into our writing room to live in our imaginations for the duration of the writing project, which is usually two to three nights a week for anywhere from three to six months at a time.

Mirror’s Despair was no different in this regard. We started writing the first book in the Mirror Worlds series, Mirror’s Hope, back in 2013 and back then we were both going through some difficult times. Without going into details, at that time in our lives it was a wonderful gift to be able to go into our writing room and shut the door on the real world for a little while each night. It allowed us to focus on something else, feel productive and have something to show for it while spending time together doing what we both love.

And worldbuilding is a big part of that. The setting of this series, the Mirror Worlds, are two realms that exist in a precarious balance. One side worships the Creator and the other fears the return of the Destroyer and in each realm a copy of each person exists, called a ‘Mirror’. Across the four books, the story of a pair of Mirrors are told (one pair chosen by the Creator, and other by the Destroyer) following each of them as they cross back and forth discovering the true nature of their balanced worlds and what threatens it, essentially playing out a massive game of chess at the hands of two primal forces. Oh, and did I mention it’s also a romance story?

Sitting down to work on each book was like travelling to that world and joining the cast of characters on their journey. After a time, the people in the story became like friends to us, and we knew the world we lived in about as well as we know our own. It was hard to say goodbye, but also cathartic to have the story finally come to the conclusion it had been building to for so long.

In fact, writing this series was such a great escape for us, we’re now working on building another world now that our epic dark fantasy romance is complete. We’re not sure what form it will ultimately take yet, but that’s part of the fun.

The current state of the world has been a great stress on all of us and Murandy and I are no different. Even if writing is not your thing, I would definitely recommend taking up a project either with someone else, or solo; one that allows you to escape into a world of your own for a time. It can be highly therapeutic and a whole lot of fun besides.

Zarda, the Fate-seer, and the Drax she accompanied into exile have settled into a new life far to the north of their homeland, the Expanse. They have pledged their loyalty to Kalon, whose rightful place as Prime was stolen by his brother Kalis.

Zarda’s one certainty is that Kalis’ wingless heir, Dru, is destined to defeat their old enemy, the Koth; but how is he to do that when he is no longer the Prime’s heir? And how can Kalis, his scheming adviser Fazak, and their followers be overcome?

To find the answers and to help the rightful Prime take his place in the Spirax, Zarda must first find a way back through the Crimson Forest for the exiles – but danger and betrayal await them all.

Everyone murmured “May it so remain,” and, as Kalon folded his wing and the meeting broke up, I returned my attention to Dru, who was still rubbing his nose.

“Come along, I’ll put something on that for you.” Outside, clouds drifted on a warm westerly, and I paused to sniff the breeze that drifted over the lake and the island where Kalon had made his home. Avalox and kerzh-grass, both sprouting well in the centre of the island. Chalkmoss, camylvines, and a hint of kestox, their various aromas carrying distinct but faint from the lake’s western shore. The shoots and seeds we had planted there moons ago were surely almost ready to harvest. How good it would be to have kerzh-fruits again, to have camyl leaves available for balms and medicines. From the top of the hill where we stood, I looked out across the water to the islands that surrounded ours, and followed the flight-path of nine purple-clad females as they made their way from Rump Island to skim low across the water. Every few beats, clawed toes dipped below the surface and emerged with a wriggling fish. “That’s this evening’s meals supplied,” I said, my mind already running ahead to a bowl of baked white flesh basted in Rewsa’s herb sauce. Tomorrow it would be the turn of the drax on Doorway Island to provide our meals, and by then, perhaps, there would be fresh chalkmoss to add to the pots. We had no groxen meat, no zaxel, no hoxberries, but we had sufficient food to fill our stomachs, and enough variety to keep our palettes interested.

More importantly, we were safe. Though how long we would stay that way with battles and enemies to overcome, only the Spiral knew. I moved my gaze to the western shore, and nodded approval as I noticed the nines of younglings climbing the steep-sided bluff of black rock that towered beyond our crops. We would need their climbing skills soon, if my expedition to the Expanse went as planned.

Though Dru’s Vision suggested…

I shook myself. What he had Seen might mean any number of things, surely? Besides, in the Vision that my teacher, Vizan, and I had had for Dru’s future, I had been beside Dru when he defeated the Koth. If death waited on the Expanse, it could not be for me.

Could it?

Jotto and Shaya emerged from Kalon’s dwelling and walked past us, their heads together, the words I overheard indicating that they were still discussing tactics for scouting the Expanse. As they headed down the spiralling pathway toward the log-built dwellings further down the hill, I looked past them to the place I had made my home. Blue fields of kerzh-grass at the bottom of the slope reminded me of the first time I had seen the island, the day we had lost so many drax to the rapids upstream. Two drax – Jotto and Manel I’d later discovered – had been sowing seeds as they walked to and fro along clawed ruts of earth. Enough for the two nines of adults and half-growns who occupied Kalon’s Isle at the time. Now, where that flat central section of Kalon’s Island had been cultivated, nines of females and younglings with baskets were already busy cutting leaves, gathering fruit, and batting away the flisks and mites that buzzed round them.

“Zarda?” Dru had taken several steps along the path before he’d realised I was not following, and he stood, hopping from foot to foot.

“Sorry, Dru. I was remembering.” We followed the path down to my dwelling, which was the next highest on the hill, and I took the time to light a torch and shut the door behind us before I spoke again: “Well, now that Kalon and his council know you have the Sight, it won’t be long before everyone else knows.” I pulled a jar of dried sweetleaf from the shelf and set a pot of water on the fire to boil, then indicated the logs by the hearth that I used in place of stools. “You might want to tell Cavel and your other friends yourself before they hear it from someone else. Sit down.”

Dru was still rubbing his nose. “Elver doesn’t believe me,” he said, as he lowered himself onto one of the stools near the hearth and edged it away from the heat. “And Kalon doesn’t think I See clearly.”

I pulled up a stool next to him, and considered his statement. “I think perhaps they won’t allow themselves to believe you,” I said, “which is not quite the same thing. The Sight is a rare gift, Dru, rarer still in one so close to the throne-stool, and your gift is more powerful than mine.” The pot was beginning to steam, so I threw the sweetleaf into it and leaned over to sniff the sweet aroma for a moment. “You must remember that I was not Vizan’s first apprentice, Dru, nor even his second. I was a poor third, taken under his wings only because the first two died of the Sickness.”

“But you learned. Vizan taught you.”

“Yes. But he was still teaching me when he went to his last nest. There was much he did not teach me, and much I still don’t know. One of the things I don’t know is how to control what I See, to sharpen the focus, heighten the smell.” I sighed, and brushed a paw across my black Fate-seer’s tunic, wishing I felt more worthy of it.
