Book Tour: Against All Odds Anthology by Mirror World Publishing...

About Against All Odds:

Love wins against the odds, in tumultuous times, unlikely circumstances, and dangerous places...

Volume three of our Far, Far Away series brings seven authors together to put a spotlight on stories of marginalized love.

Step across the galaxy to a world where love defies gender, race, and the outbreak of war. Fight for love of all kinds when the well-being of family and friends are threatened by magic power-tools. Witness an unlikely and dangerous affair between a god and his human handler. Then learn the meaning of self-love through the lived experience of a sentient Sapphire.

Through these powerful, unique tales, love is revealed to be the ultimate risk, it gives you purpose when the world turns dark and strange, and it proves time and again that it crosses all barriers, whether they are those of culture, time, distance, or strife. In this collection, love really does conquer all.

Stories in the Anthology:

“Worldsteppers” by Jane Lupino
“Do It Yourself” by Titania Blesh
“The Pomegranate Question” by Mason Michalak
“The Value of a Sapphire” by Andrea Barton
“Chasing Llyranite” by Shannon Nell
“vAMP” by Taylor Calder
“White Snake, Jade Terrapin” by Pat Woods

For my Doki

Six months into her infection and Victoria still hates the smell of blood.

It's just after eight in the morning in France, and her client is telling her the exact size that items should be on the storefront page. Enough to fit columns of three in a standard browser window. Does she get that? Columns of three.

“Oui,” she says, “oui.” She lets them do most of the talking as a rule so they won't pick up on her accent, but right now she can barely speak at all. She is in the bathroom burning down to ash, or so it feels. She’s afraid she’s going to drop the phone. Or crush it.

Keep it together Victoria, she tells herself. You really need the money.

She tears the cap off the blood bag with her teeth. There it is, that metallic smell. It drips down her fingers. Revolting.

She tilts her head back and begins to drink. The virus's grip on her loosens as she does. Muscles relaxing, mind clearing, vAMP downregulating.

   Relief.

Someone asks if she is perhaps having a morning glass of wine, to a chorus of mild French laughter.

Victoria returns it. Her teeth stained red. She tells them she missed her morning espresso and is doubling her dose to catch up. Not that it's espresso hour for her, either; it's just after two in the morning here in her Cabbagetown walk-up. They laugh again, but she curses at herself. She knows nothing of the coffee culture in France. They might not even drink espresso.

The white-hot edge of paranoia presses against her neck. Any inconsistency could lead to her getting reported, and getting reported would lead to a lifetime of experimentation at best, and at worst…

Images from the Hive chat come to her. Bodies mutilated, burnt to structural distortion, mouths open in permanent screams. Above the corpses, a sign reminds the staff that any suspicious activity among family or colleagues must be reported. The bottom corner features an image of a syringe over what could be either a maple leaf or a stylized flame – the logo for SOQA, the Southern Ontario Quarantine Authority. In one of them you could even see Commandant Todde, the province’s interim leader and most valiant anti-vAMP crusader, giving the thumbs up to a pile of freshly-burned corpses.

Victoria sucks the blood from her fingers as quietly as she can while six thousand kilometers away, the committee discusses their choice of font. They have always liked Helvetica, they say.

Of course, she tells them in French. Licks crusting blood from the corners of her lips. Of course.

Release Date: July 17, 2024

Exclusive Excerpt:

Instead of the shallow slope dotted with white buildings, an enormous peak rose into the brightness, so tall and so massive that Cleo’s brain refused to accept its dimensions. Surely no mountain outside of Everest could be so large! And the pictures of Everest Cleo had seen showed a mountain range, craggy summits piled up on top of each other. Here there was a single symmetrical mount, impossibly large, sticking out of the azure immensity of the sea and dissolving into the azure immensity of the cloudless sky. It was as if the modest cone of Syros was somehow stretched up and blown out, creating this geological monstrosity. She could not even see its top; it dissolved in the glittering sky.

Cleo realized she was hyperventilating, so she closed her eyes, counted to twenty, and tried to control her breathing. With her Apple watch, she could turn on the Breathe app to help her calm down, except her left wrist was bare and her mobile must be in the same place as her backpack, which was nowhere she knew of.

“Are you okay?” a woman’s voice asked.

Cleo gratefully turned toward the source of the voice, trying to hang onto reality, but the impossible peak was still there on the margin of her vision, the sunlight piercingly bright on the bands of sage-green vegetation and bare limestone rock.

The woman was middle-aged, with untidy black hair and wearing a bright pink sundress. She reminded Cleo of a magpie or a crow, the way she tilted her head to the left, staring at her with curious round eyes. To Cleo’s relief, there were no arachnid pets on, or around, the woman.

“Not really,” Cleo confessed, letting go of her stiff upper lip. “I don’t know where my phone is, and…”

She realized that her voice was trembling and coughed to save herself the embarrassment of going to pieces in front of a stranger.

“You are dehydrated,” the woman declared. “Drink!”

She pulled out a battered metal thermos from her enormous handbag, unscrewed the top, filled it with murky liquid, and gave it to Cleo who stared at it dubiously. She had expected a plastic bottle, so ubiquitous in Greece that they seemed to generate spontaneously from thin air. But the copper taste in her mouth told her she needed to drink if she was not to pass out. Water was life in the Mediterranean.

She took a long draught. It was water, lukewarm and with a strange aftertaste like ammonia, but at least it was no retsina. Cleo promised herself never to touch anything stronger than lager again.

“Where are you staying?” the woman asked.

“In a tourist hotel. It’s called Villa Pharos.”

Cleo vaguely pointed toward the end of the promenade where a narrow winding alley led into the huddle of whitewashed buildings. It did not look very familiar, but then nothing did anymore.

Praise:

From Aimee Ogden, Nebula Finalist:

A compellingly alien protagonist, who also has the deeply-held and familiar belief that a better world is possible.

In THE PHEEWORKER'S OATH, neither compassion nor cruelty are traits limited to humankind. There are no easy answers to the complexities of human refugees building a new home for themselves on a different world--but it is easy to care about the compellingly alien Takey, and about his deeply-held and familiar belief that a better world is possible.

From Rachael Jones, WFA Finalist & Tiptree Award honoree:

The Pheeworker's Oath is a timely science fiction tale about a stranded human colony dependent upon the Atipok, aliens with near-mystical abilities that allow them to control their environment and their very bodies. It is a fascinating examination of how manipulative leaders harness fear of the other to gain power, and how the only way to break that power is to find kinship with the very beings you've been told to fear. This adventure story showcases timeless themes and intriguing worldbuilding. Come for the cool alien powers, stay for the lizardlike Atipok--but don't you dare call them Lizards!

Exclusive Excerpt from Embedding by Elana Gomel

I sit with Michael again in the evening, but I can see he doesn’t want me here. He is fidgeting, pulling on his blanket so hard that a seam rips. I catch his hot little hand – who knows when and whether there will be more blankets in the Box, and winter is coming – but he pushes me away fretfully. I finally give up and leave him alone, only to realize it is still early. The sun has slid behind the Wall, but the sky is of that pearly transparent pink that separates full light and darkness like a long indrawn breath. I promise myself not to send Michael to bed so early in the future. He is not a baby anymore. To make up for what might seem like a punishment to him, I go into the kitchen and set up a plate of cookies and a jam jar on the table, so he can have a treat first thing in the morning.

I step into the shadowy garden against my better judgement, breathing in the cool, earthy evening air. The berry bushes have been cemented into a tangled mass by the dimming light. The gnarly apple and plum trees stand out in spiky silhouettes against the sky. The twilight is full of unspoken menace, waiting for me to turn my back so the monsters can crawl out of their hidey-holes and spring at me.

The monsters are real, but haven’t they always been? Haven’t people always been afraid of the dark?

I lock the door, go back into the kitchen, make myself a cup of tea, and sit at the table, staring at the fading rectangle of the window. I know I need to draw the curtains, but I procrastinate, challenging the night.

Are Ruth and Melissa right? Are we in Purgatory, being punished for our sins by some perverse deity?

No, I won’t accept this. Every beat of my heart tells me I am alive. Locked up in some unfathomable prison, beset by invisible monsters, fed and watered like an animal in a zoo – but alive.

For how long?

The school’s hallways were blissfully quiet and surprisingly bright. Even the red haze seemed to clear from my mind a bit as I caught my breath within the relative safety of Shinjuku High.

Had I imagined it? Perhaps the red haze was more troublesome than I had originally thought. It seemed as if my imagination was running away with me and creating horrors where there was nothing to fear. I took a deep breath to steady myself and determined I would make a doctor’s appointment tomorrow – even my nightmares were not usually this horrible or vivid.

For now I had my glasses to find, and if I could also locate my swimsuit then a dip in the pool would certainly make me feel better. Reigning myself in, I strode with purpose toward the new swimming pool complex our school’s student council president had raised the money last year to construct for us.

As expected, I found my swimsuit in my locker in the girl’s change room, though my glasses were not in there. Changing quickly, I folded my uniform and placed it in the locker, grabbing a towel on my way out to the pool area. Considering the time, I figured that I would have the pool to myself, but surprisingly that wasn’t the case.

He was waiting there for me, the blonde exchange student.

At least for a moment it seemed that way, as he looked up expectantly at the sound of my entrance. At first I was tempted to ignore him – being a student of Shinjuku High, he had just as much right to be here as I did – but after a moment I found myself studying him curiously. Why did he seem so very familiar?

Oddly, he wasn’t wearing swim clothes, but rather he was still dressed in his school uniform from earlier in the day. Had he even gone home yet?

It occurred to me after a moment perhaps he wanted to swim, but hadn’t yet been provided with a swimsuit from the school. However, the look on his face as he regarded the calm surface of the pool betrayed a deep aversion to water.

“What are you doing here?” The question escaped me before I even wondered if it would be rude of me to ask.

He looked startled, then immediately confused. “Me? Oh, I…” He stumbled over his words as if embarrassed and I noticed that though he was speaking Japanese, his accent was decidedly foreign, almost Scottish or Irish. “I suppose I just wanted to see it.”

“See what?”

He turned his attention back to the pool and gestured vaguely at the clear blue water.

“Haven’t you ever seen a pool before?” I asked, startled by his answer.

He shook his head, looking confused. “No, I don’t think I have.”

I found myself wondering where he had come from and wishing I had paid more attention to his introduction this morning. I opened my mouth to ask him when I was interrupted by the distant, yet unforgettable, sound of a chilling inhuman scream.

“What was that?!” I asked no one in particular, but he answered me regardless.

“Lillem.” The word brought up a sudden wall of red fog and I fought to see through it.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Emily was a scullery maid. She knew this beyond a shadow of a doubt because her head was in a pot, her hands were raw and chafed, and she sat on the worn stone floor of the scullery, her legs splayed out to either side of the aforementioned pot, bracing it so she could reach the very bottom and scrub it until it shined. Or at least until it gleamed dully; the pots were getting old, like everything else in Hyatt House.

Nothing less would do. Not for Lady Dorothea Hyatt and not for Cook, who would swat Emily’s bottom with her long handled spoon if she so much as thought of doing less than was expected of her. Speaking of the cook…Emily ducked her head out of the oversized stock pot and listened for a moment. The kitchen beyond the partially open scullery door where the light was coming from was uncharacteristically silent. Maybe she fell asleep again.

Emily gave a sniff and could just make out a whiff of blueberry scones, fresh from the oven. Her stomach growled plaintively. She listened a moment longer, but didn’t hear any sounds of Cook pattering about, or even the woman’s snores, which were quite distinctive.

Curious and more than a little hungry, Emily got to her feet, leaving the scrubbing brush on the floor of the scullery. She wiped her hands on the front of her already filthy apron, and then darted to the faded wooden door for a look. Peeking her head slowly around the door, she found the kitchen devoid of people. There was no Cook in sight and no other staff either; not that that was odd, there were hardly enough of them left to bump into each other anymore.

Absently smoothing her unruly nest of curly red hair in a futile attempt to make herself look like she could possibly belong in a room where food was prepared, Emily strode purposefully into the old, but well-appointed kitchen. Her feet were chilled by the cool tiles of the kitchen floor through the holes in her worn stockings, while her nose led her to where the scones rested on the countertop.

She took a deep sniff, filling her belly with the warm fragrant fumes in case they were all she got, then after looking both ways she confirmed she was indeed alone before she reached out and snatched the smallest, most misshapen looking scone; the reject, the one nobody would miss. Emily was about to shove that scone between her meagre breasts to hide it and then scurry back to the scullery to devour it in secret, when the faintest hint of a conversation drew her attention beyond the world of misshapen scones and dirty dishes.

“No, there will be no discussion,” Dorothea’s voice rose to the point it could be heard clearly from the parlour, two rooms away. “Your services are simply no longer required.”

There are so few of us left now as it is. Emily worried her bottom lip, wondering which of the maids would be leaving this time. A list of possible victims floated through her mind. Old Victor? She considered the gruff old groundskeeper, who was surly to everyone but had always been kind to her in his own way. He’d let her pick flowers out of the gardens a time or two to decorate her little attic bedroom and he let her visit the stables sometimes to spend time with the horses.

Becca? Oh, I hope it isn’t Becca. Until recently, Becca had been the house’s chambermaid, responsible for cleaning rooms and turning down beds and such. But ever since Darla had been dismissed Becca had been doing double duty, serving at meals, taking care of the elderly Lady Anastasia, and handling tea service on top of her regular duties. From where Emily stood, Becca was indispensable, but there was no accounting for the thought process of a woman like Dorothea.

Emily was just about running out of potential subjects as the washing-woman already only came by on Sundays, when the person in question spoke and her thick, mannish voice gave her away as nothing else could have. “I’ll take my leave then,” Cook said, “but mark me, you won’t find anyone near as good willing to work for the pennies you provide. Perhaps you’re doing me a favour in the long run. I can make more coin elsewhere.”

Emily could just imagine the expression on Dorothea’s lined face. Her pursed lips and pinched brows over icy blue eyes. The wrinkles on her forehead pulled tight and straining against the clips that held her greying black hair in an immaculate bun without a single strand out of her control, despite the white strip that always made Emily think of a skunk and reminded her to always be wary of Dorothea’s temper.

“Perhaps,” Dorothea responded and it was not in agreement.

In her preoccupation, Emily had gotten right up to the pale blue kitchen door so she could better hear what was going on. Now, heavy footfalls warned her that somebody, probably Cook, was headed her way, and if she didn’t snap to she would be crushed by the door swinging inwards on its hinges.

Emily jumped backwards like a cat startled by a foreign object. She narrowly missed being struck by the door, but she hadn’t moved fast or far enough to avoid being spotted by Cook and she still held the incriminating scone tightly in her grimy fist.

Meet the Authors:

Justine Alley Dowsett (right) is the author of more than ten novels and one of the founders of Mirror World Publishing. Her books, which she often co-writes with her sister, Murandy Damodred (left), range from young adult science fiction to dark fantasy/romance. She earned a BA in Drama from the University of Windsor, honed her skills as an entrepreneur by tackling video game production, and now she dedicates her time to writing, publishing, and occasionally roleplaying with her friends.

With a background in Drama and Communications from the University of Windsor, Murandy Damodred enjoys fantasy fiction with strong romantic subplots. She is an avid role-player and is happiest when living vicariously through her characters. Though she'd rather think of herself as the heroine of her next novel, in the real world she is a nurse and a mom of two living in Windsor, Ontario.
